World Premiere - "One Life at a Time!"

The mission of Mel Trotter Ministries to fight homelessness will be played out on the big screen when the film “One Life at a Time” premieres Oct. 10, World Homelessness Day, at Celebration Cinema’s Studio Park.

The movie, written and produced by Jason Campbell of JCFilms, was filmed at and around Mel Trotter Ministries during the summer. It stars former “Superman” actor Dean Cain and Luke Schroder, son of former “Silver Spoons” and “NYPD Blue” actor Rick Schroder.

It tells a story of what homelessness looks like through the eyes of someone who has a different upbringing and higher socioeconomic status. The movie highlights the importance of awareness and the misconceptions of homelessness in West Michigan.

“Dean Cain and I are so excited about coming to Grand Rapids this summer to make this important film,” Campbell said in February. “As the problems of homelessness increase around our nation, so do the stereotypes, and we hope we can change our perceptions and find solutions through this film project.”

Founder Melvin E. Trotter is honored in the film, which is premiering on the nonprofit’s 120th anniversary.

“We are all wired to connect our lives with others through stories. Jesus told stories all the time to help people understand what God is like and what life is about,” said Dennis Van Kampen, president and CEO of Mel Trotter Ministries. “Our hope is that through this film, viewers would connect deeply with that same fundamental truth.”

The outdoor screenings are scheduled for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Patrons also can register to view the movie online.
